Neuroleadership
Neuroscience is a word being used a lot at the moment, but what exactly is it?
Neuroscience is an evidence (research) based understanding of how the brain works and how it affects our emotions, behaviour, motivation, engagement, memory, attention, collaboration and interactions with others (including conflict), as well as our responses to change and why we tend to be resistant to it.
Neuroleadership is applying neuroscience in a practical and ‘everyday’ way so that you can positively shape how you work and interact with others. This includes:
- Better understanding your own responses to situations, regulating your own emotions and shaping your own behaviour
- Managing your stress, anxiety, distraction and energy levels, and
- Understanding others and helping them to respond more effectively.
Even a basic understanding of how the brain functions and the science behind it can help you to be more effective. Add a few targeted strategies and ways of approaching different situations and you have even more opportunity to positively influence an interaction and its outcomes.
I have completed a nationally accredited Diploma in the Neuroscience of Leadership, attended a number of professional development events and have read widely in the area of neuroscience. I’m also a great believer in the potential of neuroplasticity – i.e. our ability to change our brain wiring through focus, effort and persistence. It is an area of significant interest and engagement for me and I consistently stay abreast of new knowledge and research.
